A local athlete is celebrating after being selected to represent Great Britain at the inaugural World Para Athletics Championships.

Stockton teenager, Amy Carr, a member of Tees Active Sports Academy and Middlesbrough AC, is one of the 14 athletes British travelling to the event in Nottwil, Switzerland in Augus.

She will be competing in the T37 classification in the 100m, 200m and long jump.

Amy has already obtained personal bests in the 100m and long jump this season and will be focusing her training to peak for early August and the championships.

A delighted Amy said “It’s a fantastic honour to represent GB and makes the hard work that I put in during the winter months, particularly in the gym all worthwhile.

“I feel really strong and fast at the moment and I have been adding hydro sessions at Billingham Forum to supplement my training.

“I will be pulling out all the stops to produce some fast times and long jumps in Switzerland.”

Para Athletics Head Coach, Paula Dunn, added “The World Para Athletics Junior Championships provides a valuable opportunity for our talented young athletes to gain experience in the major games environment.

“I have no doubt the 14 athletes will use this championship wisely and hopefully learn plenty from it.

“This is an important part in the development pathway for these athletes as we build towards the Tokyo Paralympic Games in 2020.

“For many, this will be their first appearance in a British vest, and it will be crucial as we progress over the next few years.”
