Triathletes race on to sea front

MORE than 500 triathletes took to the North Sea in Redcar’s Sprint Triathlon on Sunday.

That’s more than three times the number who took part in last year’s event.

For the first time, this year’s event was one of three World Sprint Triathlon Championship qualifying events taking place across the country.

It was also the only one in the Northern region, which meant athletes from across the north were quick to sign up.

Cllr Dale Quigley, cabinet member for culture, tourism and communications, said: “It is an honour to be selected as one of just a handful of Team GB qualifying events for the World Sprint Triathlon Championship, hopefully with enough support from the public this will be the first of many qualifying events held in Redcar.”
