Welcome to Stockton by the sea!
LIFE’S a beach on Stockton High Street this summer – thanks to the council.
There’s everything you would expect to find on the coast at Saltburn or Redcar – sand, deckchairs and buckets and spades.
But this temporary “popup beach” has landed right in the middle of Stockton High Street.
As passers-by enjoyed the sound of the live Caribbean steel drums at its launch on Saturday, children built sandcastles while shoppers browsed the stalls selling Caribbean food, beach toys and cakes.
Karen Hindhaugh, business improvement district manager, was delighted with the response to the “pop-up” beach after it was officially opened by the Mayor of Stockton, Maurice Perry.
She said: “It’s great, we’ve literally been open five minutes and it’s full of people enjoying themselves.
“It’s all about bringing people into the town centre.
“People can come and shop, eat and drink here before looking around the rest of the town centre.
“Every weekend there is live entertainment and a different theme as well. Next weekend it’s a vintage beach theme and the week after that it’s pirates.
“Hopefully people will say ‘that was great, I’m going to come back’.”
The beach is open every day from 9.30am-4pm until August 31.
