Hundreds take part in procession

Middleton Guardian - - CHURCH FEAST DAY -

THE Feast of Corpus Christi was celebrated with a huge procession through Middleton on Sunday.

The procession, led by Father Kieren Mullarkey of St Peter’s Church, took place in the blazing sunshine, one of the hottest days of the year so far.

Among those taking part was Jim Healy, who received the Benemerenti medal, an honour awarded by the Pope for service to the Catholic church. He is thought to be the church’s oldest parishioner.

The route went from Taylor Street to Victoria Street, onto Townley Street then left along Oldham Road.

Near the Police Station the procession turned left up Manchester New Road and onto Mount Road.

At the Lancashire Fold the procession turned left down Kirkway to Townley Street, before returning to Taylor Street via Victoria Street.

Our Bygones correspondent Harold Cunliffe captured these images from the procession.
