Din­ner to cel­e­brate char­ity

A DIN­NER is tak­ing place at the Manch­ester Golf Club in Hopwood, to cel­e­brate the 325th an­niver­sary of the ‘John Stoke Char­ity.’

The char­ity to this day, and from its ori­gins, has been giv­ing bread to the poor and money for young boy and girl ap­pren­tices in the Par­ish of Mid­dle­ton, which orig­i­nally com­prised of Mid­dle­ton, Hopwood, Thorn­ham and Pilsworth.

The din­ner takes place on Tues­day, Au­gust 29.

John Stocke was born at Hopwood, went down to London and was in­volved in the dye­ing and fin­ish­ing of cloth.

John made his for­tune in busi­ness and came back north to ac­quire Ord­sall Hall and es­tate in 1706.

The char­ity will also, through kind per­mis­sion of the Olde Boars Head Inn in Mid­dle­ton, have a room ded­i­cated to its founder and named ‘ The John Stocke Room.’
