Dinner to celebrate charity
A DINNER is taking place at the Manchester Golf Club in Hopwood, to celebrate the 325th anniversary of the ‘John Stoke Charity.’
The charity to this day, and from its origins, has been giving bread to the poor and money for young boy and girl apprentices in the Parish of Middleton, which originally comprised of Middleton, Hopwood, Thornham and Pilsworth.
The dinner takes place on Tuesday, August 29.
John Stocke was born at Hopwood, went down to London and was involved in the dyeing and finishing of cloth.
John made his fortune in business and came back north to acquire Ordsall Hall and estate in 1706.
The charity will also, through kind permission of the Olde Boars Head Inn in Middleton, have a room dedicated to its founder and named ‘ The John Stocke Room.’
