Crash leads to major delays on motorway
MOTORISTS faced major delays on the M62 on Sunday night after a multi-vehicle crash near Rochdale.
Two lanes of the westbound carriageway were closed between junctions 19 and 20 following the collision shortly before 6.30pm.
Police said four people were injured, with some casualties taken to hospital by air ambulance. Their conditions are not known.
Traffic England urged drivers to avoid the area, with delays expected until at least 10.15pm. Tailbacks could be seen for several miles, past junction 21 near Milnrow and Shaw. The North West Motorway Police confirmed the collision on Twitter at 6.24pm: “Multiple Veh RTC Jct 20-19, M62, 2 lanes blocked, emergency services on scene, traffic queueing.”
Highways England added: “Lanes 1 and 2 closed #M62 W/B btwn J20 + J19 due to a multi vehicle collision.”
They added that Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue service were also on the scene and urged drivers to approach with caution. It came after the motorway was completely closed in North Yorkshire on Sunday between J33 (Ferrybridge) and J34 (Whitley Bridge) following a serious two-vehicle crash.
