DETECTIVES believe a rugby league player who died in a car crash may have been drunk at the wheel.

Swinton Lions prop forward Dana Wilson, 28, was killed when his Fiat Punto left the road and ploughed into a tree at about 3.30am on Sunday.

The New Zealand-born star, a father-of-three, was not discovered until about 7.05am after passers-by notified police.

Officers are now investigating whether Wilson — who celebrated winning the Co-operative Championship One title with the Lions on Friday — was over the limit when found in Warrington.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said cops “will examine the circumstances of the crash including the possibility that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol”.
