Champions League kit thieves Kraut of order

Midweek Sport - - FRONT PAGE -

A STUDENT stole a footie team’s kitbag from a hotel before a Champions League tie with Manchester United — then went back to get players’ autographs, wearing one of their tracksuits.

Stephen Carruthers, 20, found the bag, containing tracksuits, shirts and boots from German side FC Schalke at the Marriot Hotel in Worsley the night before the semi final in May.

He and two pals were in the hotel to meet the German players, and collect signatures.

Manchester Crown Court heard Carruthers took a tracksuit, pal Nathan Terry, 19, took out a shirt, and James McWatt, 19, tried on a pair of boots.

The bag was stored in McWatt’s car, and the three were arrested when Carruthers went back to the hotel wearing the German kit.

The trio were fined £200 each and ordered to pay court costs.
