KABUL TARGETS IN 9/11ATTACK

Midweek Sport - - FRONT PAGE -

AFGHAN security forces were last night battling a multi-pronged attack by insurgents targeting the US embassy, Nato headquarters and police buildings in Kabul.

Police exchanged fire with two gunmen holed up in an unfinished high-rise building overlooking the diplomatic quarter.

Six people were killed and 16 injured, Kabul's police chief said.

The Taliban said they were behind the violence.

Police killed four insurgents, police chief General Ayub told newsmen.

“This attack is the work of the Haqqani network.” he said. The Haqqani network is allied to the Taliban.

Gen Ayub said the insurgents wanted to carry out attacks to mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Nato said the attack was an attempt to derail the se- curity handover to Afghanled forces, as international troops begin to withdraw.

The attacks began when insurgents fired rockets into Kabul's upmarket embassy district.

At the same time, suicide bombers struck targets across the city.

A Taliban spokesman said the group was carrying out ‘a massive suicide attack on local and foreign intelligence facilities’.
