Obama: Old Libya regime is over
US PRESIDENT Barack Obama has called on Libya’s pro-Gaddafi fighters to lay down their weapons and recognise “the old regime is over”.
In a speech at the UN headquarters in New York he said: “So long as the Libyan people are being threatened, the Nato-led mission to protect them will continue.
“Those still holding out must understand the old regime is over, and it is time to lay down your arms and join the new Libya.”
Mr Obama said the US ambassador would return to Tripoli, adding: “This week, the American flag that was lowered before our embassy was attacked will be raised again.”
His comments followed another day of heavy fighting in Libya yesterday, where opposition forces claim to have captured key sites in one of Muammar Gaddafi’s last strongholds.
