Warships are under way
WORK has officially started on two of the largest ever Royal Navy warships.
Peter Luff, Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology, was at Rosyth, Fife, to see the start of construction on the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers.
Goliath, Europe’s biggest crane, will lift sections of the 65,000tonne vessels into place at Babcock’s shipyard later this week.
The construction project is worth billions of pounds to Scotland’s economy and will create and sustain thousands of jobs.
Mr Luff said: “It is a huge privilege to witness what can only be described as history in the making.
“The job of building these carriers is a huge challenge but we are very fortunate to have such a dedicated and skilled workforce.”
