SIT­COM writ­ing leg­end David Croft has died at the age of 89.

With Jimmy Perry he was part of Bri­tish telly’s most suc­cess­ful team, help­ing to pen clas­sics Dad’s Army, It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, Hi-De-Hi! You Rang, M’Lord?

’Allo ’Allo, Are You Be­ing Served?, Grace and Favour Oh, Doc­tor Beech­ing.

He re­ceived an OBE in 1978.

His agent Tim Han­cock said Croft passed away at his hol­i­day home in Por­tu­gal. A state­ment re­leased by his fam­ily said that Croft “died peace­fully in his sleep. He was a truly great man, who will be missed by all who had the great for­tune of know­ing him.

“We know he would have been proud that you had all been watch­ing.”
