COMPUTER geeks are leading the fight against Somali pirates – using online VIDEO GAMES.

The lawless gangs have been causing havoc amongst international shipping off the coast of east Africa for more than a decade. But the world's navies have struggled to defeat them.

Now, thanks to a group of computer game addicts, their rule could soon be over.

The US Navy has been using a computer programme called MMOWGLI (Massive Multiplayer Online WarGame Leveraging the Internet) which lets people play as pirates or pirate-hunters.

They are now analysing decisions made by gamers to come up with a strategy to beat them.

Dr. Larry Schutte, of the Office of Naval Research, said: “We hope MMOWGLI will result in a game-changing idea or solution.” NAME: Pippa Heighton AGE: 33 FROM: Newcastle OCCUPATION: Receptionist RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Married FAVE DRINK: Beer FAVE FOOD: Battered cod FAVE FILM: Sleepless in Seattle FAVE ACTOR: Tom Hanks
