World Cup ’66 lovely bubbly
THEY thought it was all over when the last remaining bottle of champagne given to England’s 1966 World Cup winners was found gathering dust in a cupboard.
The bottle – one of a case of 12 Heidsieck Dry Monopole magnums produced specially for Alf Ramsey’s winning squad – was the only one not drunk during the postmatch celebrations.
Ramsey, a strict task master, despised his players’ boozing and gave his bottle to dressing room attendant Jim Green.
Now the magnum is going under the hammer this week with an estimate of £2,000.
A spokesman for Mullocks Auctioneers in Shropshire said: “A guy whose dad found it in a cupboard is putting it up for auction.”
