Riots caused by ‘lack of respect’
RIOTERS have blamed the police for causing them to loot shops and burn down people’s homes – because they don’t show them enough respect.
Senior officers have reacted with fury to the claims made in a report commissioned by the Guardian newspaper with the London School of Economics.
They held out interviews with 270 rioters, who blamed policing just behind poverty as a trigger and said their looting and violence was ‘payback’.
Tim Newburn, report author and a professor at the LSE, said: “Underlying it all was a sense of discourtesy, the rudeness and aggressiveness, they said they had faced.”
But Simon Reed, of the Police Federation, blamed: “common criminals taking advantage of the situation for their own means.”
