MOST Bri­tish mums and dads worry their chil­dren ex­pect too much in the way of presents for Christ­mas, a study shows.

A Fam­ily and Parenting In­sti­tute sur­vey found that 55 per cent with kids un­der 18 fear they’ll be dis­ap­pointed.

Four in five par­ents with chil­dren un­der 18 think Christ­mas makes kids more ma­te­ri­al­is­tic.

And al­most 90 per cent be­lieve ad­ver­tis­ing puts pres­sure on mums and dads to spend more than they can af­ford.

The In­sti­tute’s chief ex­ec­u­tive, Dr Kather­ine Rake, said the shock sta­tis­tics show that “the com­mer­cial­i­sa­tion of Christ­mas causes par­ents sig­nif­i­cant strain”, adding “Tough eco­nomic times make the is­sue all the more sig­nif­i­cant.”
