BEING proud to be British makes you feel good about life, according to new research.

Boffins found the kind of pride that makes people happiest is when they feel they “belong” to a country – regardless of ethnicity.

Scientists studied 41,000 residents from 31 European countries and found civic pride was linked to a general feeling of well-being.

And those who feel a country’s traditions, laws and institutions make them feel they belong often have a better quality of life.

The study was carried out by political scientists and top sociologists at the American University in Washington and the Catholic University in Belgium.

Study leader Matthew Wright said: “Civic nationalists are on the whole happier, and even the proudest ethnic nationalists’ well-being barely surpassed that of people with the lowest level of civic pride.”
