DE JONG GETS CALL TO WAR Man City outcast a target for QPR boss
NEIL WARNOCK has launched a bold bid to sign Manchester City reject Nigel De Jong on loan.
QPR boss Warnock is ready to test Roberto Mancini with an offer to bring the Dutch international to Loftus Road for the rest of the season.
Warnock has a list of targets for the January transfer window and wants De Jong to help the club earn Premier League survival.
The midfielder, 26, has not started a top flight game for City since November but appeared as a substitute in the defeat at Chelsea on Monday night.
De Jong wants City to offer him a new contract as his present deal is due to expire at the end of next season.
But he has struggled to find a place in Mancini’s starting lineup and Warnock will make an audacious bid to land him next month.
Warnock will be backed with substantial funds by chairman Tony Fernandes, with a striker and a centre-half also on his wish list.
“The board know we need some more players and they’ve been very supportive,” said the QPR boss.
“We’re on the lookout for four or five. I’m not saying they’re all going to be big-name signings but we need numbers in the squad.”
Shaun Wright-phillips insists QPR are ready to crush Man United’s hopes of going top of the Premier League.
United will overtake SWP’S former club Manchester City, for a few hours at least, if they win at Loftus Road on Sunday.
But the Hoops have saved their best performances for big teams this season and beat Chelsea before pushing Manchester City close.
Wright-phillips said: “It’s a massive game to play in and we’re all looking forward to it.
“Hopefully we can do the same thing we did to Chelsea and move up the table again.
“We have done really well against the big clubs and we have to do that on a consistent basis, that is always the hardest part as a team.”
Top scorer Heidar Helguson should return after a groin problem.
