MICK MC­CARTHY is lin­ing up a £2mil­lion bid for Wi­gan hardman Mo­hamed Di­ame in the Jan­uary sales.

Wolves boss Mc­carthy will take on Stoke in a bat­tle to snatch the Sene­gal in­ter­na­tional.

Di­ame, 24, is out of con­tract in the sum­mer and has been in ne­go­ti­a­tions with Wi­gan over an ex­ten­sion for months.

But Mc­carthy is des­per­ate to re­cruit a de­fen­sive mid­fielder to boost his sur­vival bid.

Wolves have watched Mid­dles­brough’s Rhys Wil­liams and are keen to make at least three sign­ings in the trans­fer win­dow.

But Mc­carthy ad­mit­ted: “Sign­ing play­ers is dif­fi­cult. They’re al­ways more ex­pen­sive in Jan­uary.” DAR­REN FLETCHER has been handed an ex­tended lay-off af­ter Manch­ester United re­vealed the Scot­land skip­per is bat­tling a chronic bowel con­di­tion.

The mid­fielder has made 10 ap­pear­ances for United this sea­son but has been strug­gling with the prob­lem since the start of last year.

Fletcher has a chronic inf lam­ma­tory bowel con­di­tion, which has seen his weight fall and sapped his en­ergy lev­els.

United have con­firmed that they used the ex­cuse of vi­ral ill­nesses to ex­plain Fletcher’s ab­sences from the side since March in or­der to pre­serve his con­fi­den­tial­ity.
