Gin-sip­ping old wo­man tops our fave ad­verts list

A PO-FACED OAP who prefers gin to tea is the star of the year’s most pop­u­lar TV ad­vert.

The clip, used to ad­ver­tise su­per­mar­ket Aldi, saw off chal­lenges from the John Lewis Christ­mas ad­vert and Volk­swa­gen’s ad which fea­tured a small boy dressed as Darth Vader.

The Aldi ad shows a wo­man talk­ing about her hus­band’s favourite brands of tea be­fore pulling out a large gin and tonic and telling view­ers, ‘I don’t like tea. I like gin’.

It came top in a poll car­ried out by re­search com­pany Nielsen to find the most mem­o­rable ads.

Dar­ren Moore, from Nielsen, said: “This year re­lat­able char­ac­ters re­placed celebri­ties in the most-liked list.”
