Chelsea 11 points adrift of Manchester City and Manchester United who head the table.

And Mata admits it is going to be a tough ask for the Blues to claw their way back into the title race.

He added: “It is going to be very difficult because there are a lot of teams and they are having very good seasons like Arsenal, like Tottenham, like Liverpool – so we have to fight.

“Our next game is another that we have to win, but Aston Villa is a very good team.

“We wanted to achieve the six points in our two home games but against Fulham we got one, and we hope to win three points against Aston Villa.”

Frustrated

Florent Malouda has declared he is ready to quit Stamford Bridge.

The France winger has grown frustrated with his role on the bench at the club after starting just one of the club’s last nine games.

And Malouda, 31, is eyeing a move away, with Paris St Germain likely to swoop for the player in January.

He said: “I can’t be satisfied with that – there’s a huge difference between the amount of time I’m playing and what my ambitions are.

“So we’ll see what happens in the winter transfer market.

“If I have to I’ll go elsewhere because, looking back at the first half of the season, I just can’t be satisfied with that.”
