Rugby brawl leads to six months jail
A RUGBY player has been jailed for six months after an on-pitch brawl left another man nursing a broken jaw.
Jack Weston (above) landed two punches to the head of opponent Ben Staunton in a heated local derby.
Despite Staunton playing on until the end of the game in Bath, he was later found to have a broken jaw.
Amy Jones, prosecuting, said: “There was a melee between the two sides in which Mr Staunton was surrounded by four opponents. One had his hand around his face and another was gouging his eye.”
As the clash unfolded, witnesses described how Weston, who plays second row for Keynsham RFC, ran into the mix and struck Staunton twice.
Staunton, who plays for Oldfield Old Boys, described the first blow as “six out of ten and awarded the second punch a full ten out ten”, Miss Jones said.
Weston, 24, of Bristol, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm.
