Bump victims may not be bumped off
CAR giant Volvo is to fit airbags to the FRONT of their motors to help stop pedestrians dying in crashes.
The external airbag – mounted to the bonnet – will inflate in the event of a prang, making previously fatal accidents survivable.
It’s designed to prevent the most common types of injuries, when pedestrians and cyclists roll over the bonnet and strike the metal pillars below and to the side of the windscreen.
Swedish carmakers Volvo say the technology could be fitted to ALL their vehicles within eight years.
Thomas Broberg, safety advisor to Volvo, said: “It should be effective in most frontal impacts.”
The first external airbag will be fitted to the new V40 model, which goes on sale later this year.
