Wardens’ ID spy camera plan outrage

Midweek Sport - - NEWS -

TRAFFIC wardens are being equipped with spy cameras hidden in their identity badges to snare any abusive motorists they ticket.

A number of councils across the UK have bought the cameras to provide evidence in disputed cases.

The only sign that the badge hides a tiny camera is a small sticker saying “CCTV in operation”.

Wardens are only meant to switch them on if they believe a confrontation with a motorist is about to take place but civil liberty campaigners say the snooping goes too far.

Nick Pickles, director of Big Brother Watch, said: “A tiny warning hardly constitutes telling someone they’re being recorded.

“It’s just another attack on our privacy and treats every member of the public as being under suspicion.”

Council chiefs say it will help protect staff.
