A DARTS fan drowned under a sheet of ice after falling into a frozen lake as he took a shortcut back to his hotel room from the World Championships at the Lakeside Country Club.

An inquest heard how Philip Hughes had gone with pals to watch the BDO Darts World Championship at the legendary Frimley Green club in Surrey on January 6, 2010.

But after a night watching darts and boozing with friends the 45-year-old headed for his room at the Continental Hotel, which is in the grounds of the club.

But rather than walking along paths to the hotel where he was staying with wife Cherie he took a shortcut across Wharfenden Lake.

The frozen surface broke and Mr Hughes, of Slough, Berkshire was trapped 15ft from the shore.

Verdict: Accidental death.
