Ref­eree kicker es­capes prison

A SUN­DAY League foot­baller who launched a ‘cow­ardly’ at­tack on a ref­eree has es­caped be­ing sent to jail.

Philip Giles ( above), 22, had been warned about his ag­gres­sive be­hav­iour and foul lan­guage by ref James John­son dur­ing a Sun­day Ama­teur League match.

But af­ter be­ing sworn at again, Mr John­son, 19, showed him a red card.

Ap­pren­tice elec­tri­cian Giles be­gan walk­ing but ran back, jumped and kicked the ref in the face.

Mr John­son needed six stitches in an eye wound, Manch­ester Min­shull Street Crown Court heard.

Giles pleaded guilty to as­sault oc­ca­sion­ing ac­tual bod­ily harm and was given 10-month’s jail sus­pended two years.
