Referee kicker escapes prison
A SUNDAY League footballer who launched a ‘cowardly’ attack on a referee has escaped being sent to jail.
Philip Giles ( above), 22, had been warned about his aggressive behaviour and foul language by ref James Johnson during a Sunday Amateur League match.
But after being sworn at again, Mr Johnson, 19, showed him a red card.
Apprentice electrician Giles began walking but ran back, jumped and kicked the ref in the face.
Mr Johnson needed six stitches in an eye wound, Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard.
Giles pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was given 10-month’s jail suspended two years.
