Thief scarred cut­ting cable

A COP­PER thief nearly died and suf­fered per­ma­nent in­juries af­ter be­ing elec­tro­cuted while saw­ing through a live cable in a sub-sta­tion.

An ex­plo­sion oc­curred af­ter Michael Stock­ton, who had been as­sured by his ac­com­plices that the power was off, broke in and be­gan to cut through the wire, a court heard.

Stock­ton, 35, who ad­mit­ted he had been “an idiot”, be­came in­volved af­ter be­ing co­erced by mem­bers of the trav­el­ling com­mu­nity.

Liver­pool Crown Court heard Stock­ton plead guilty to bur­glary in Rain­hill, which left 1,500 homes with­out electricity and caused up to £70,000 worth of dam­age.

He was given eight months’ jail sus­pended 12 months and placed un­der su­per­vi­sion and cur­few.
