Death driver is cleared by jury

A BUS driver who run over and killed a pedes­trian walked free from court af­ter he was cleared of care­less driv­ing.

Michael Aspland, 61, col­lided with 28-year-old Ivo Zoia as he drove his dou­ble-decker back to the de­pot at the end of a shift on April 21st last year.

Mr Zoia was walk­ing down the cen­tre of the road on his way home from a party and stepped into the path of the on­com­ing ve­hi­cle.

Aspland, of Wallington, Sur­rey, was ac­cused of fall­ing be­low the stan­dard of “care­ful and com­pe­tent” driver but was cleared of caus­ing death by care­less driv­ing by an Old Bai­ley jury af­ter in­sist­ing he had been driv­ing with due care and at­ten­tion.
