Star Wars Chewie gets a fur price


THE orig­i­nal Chew­bacca head from Star Wars has fetched £110,000 at auc­tion.

Brit ac­tor Peter May­hew’s iconic hairy mask sparked a fierce bid­ding bat­tle at the Hol­ly­wood Vaults sale in Los Angeles.

The “Chewie” head­piece, worn the 7ft 3in ac­tor in the smash-hit sci-fi tril­ogy, was one of 400 movie mem­o­ra­bilia lots that raised al­most £2mil­lion.

It even­tu­ally went un­der the ham­mer for £90,000, with the buyer’s pre­mium adding an­other £20,000.

Large-scale mod­els of a Nautilus sub­ma­rine and squid from Dis­ney’s 1954 film 20,000 Leagues Un­der the Sea made £100,000 at the same sale.

And the eye-catch­ing Ed­ward Scis­sorhands cos­tume worn by Jonny Depp in the 1990 hit film raised £55,000.

Christo­pher Reeve’s fa­mous Su­per­man suit, worn in the 1978 flick, sold for £50,000.

And Gene Wilder’s out­fit from 1971 cult clas­sic Willy Wonka and the Choco­late Fac­tory went for £47,000.
