Saddle have to do as Zara takes silver

Midweek Sport - - THURSDAY AUG 1 -

ZARA PHILLIPS was forced to settle for silver behind Germany in the equestrian team eventing competition.

Phillips and teammate Nicola Wilson looked as though they’d blown their medal hopes before colleague Tina Cook rode a clear round to fend off third-placed New Zealand.

After her round, Phillips said: “I’m just disappointed for the team.

“You want to put your team in the best position, don’t you?”

But Cook saved the day on Miners Frolic 12 months after the horse was critically ill.

Cook said: “The vets that kept him alive, the team at home, we got him here. It’s been stressful but when it comes to this and the crowd, it’s unbelievable.”

William Fox-Pitt and Mary King made up the rest of the GB team.

And King said: “There was a chance to overtake the Germans but they put in a great performance and deserve it. They’ve done better than we have.”
