GB’s r ow­ers lifted the home na­tion’s

gloom and re­main on course to de­liver a much-

needed gol­drush. The light­weight men’s four­re­in­forced

their sta­tus as favourites, be­com­ing the seventh

British cr ew to book a fi­nal place with six more

boats to race. The women’s eight and men’s dou­ble

scull of Bill Lu­cas and Sam Townsend also made

it through the semi-fi­nal stage yes­ter­day. And, af­ter a raft of dis­ap­point­ments,

the suc­cess of the row­ers has come at just the Townsend right time. said: “We def­i­nitely need to switch

off now. It’s a long time be­tween the

races and you can think too much about stuf

f. You can’t let it crip­ple you. “From the 800m mark the noise

cranks up. The boat felt like it was be­ing pushed

for­ward by the noise.”
