A DRIVER was crushed to death when he fell out of the STEAMROLLER he was operating – and it trundled over him.

The tragic worker, aged 56, is believed to have slipped out of the front of the vehicle before it ran him over.

Horrified onlookers called emergency services who rushed to the scene near a farm in Colerne, Wilts, to help the victim, but he died before they arrived.

A spokeswoman for Great Western Ambulance Service confirmed: “We got a call on Monday morning at 8.14 with a report that a male in his 50s had fallen from a roller.

“He was not conscious or breathing due to the traumatic injuries he had suffered. Our staff arrived, they confirmed that the patient was deceased at the scene.

“We believe that he fell from the roller and then it rolled over him.”

A police spokesman said: “We attended a report of a seriously injured man following what appears to be an accident involving an industrial roller.

“Sadly, the 56-yearold local man was deceased at the scene. His family have been informed but formal identification has not yet been completed.

“When they are we will release his details.”

The Health and Safety Executive have been informed.
