£500k on TVS for prisoners
SCOTTISH Prison Service (SPS) chiefs have come under fire after spending £500,000 on flat-screen TVs for jailbirds.
A total of 1,600 new 19-inch sets – with 20 built-in digital channels, DVD and CD players – are being installed across Scotland’s 13 publicly-funded prisons.
The SPS has defended the upgrade, insisting it will SAVE the taxpayer £80,000 on energy bills.
But the move was branded “unnecessary” by spending watchdog the TaxPayers’ Alliance.
Campaign manager Robert Oxley said: “Many ordinary taxpayers are unable to afford flash new TV sets, so it’s not right that inmates are treated to expensive luxuries.”
A spokesman for SPS said: “The purchase of new low-energy TVs will be cost neutral to SPS.”
