A WALKER was killed by a train as he tried to play a prank on a friend during a countryside trek.
Joker John Townsend, 58, secretly climbed down an embankment near the line while on a 10-mile hike with his walking mate.
An inquest heard he wanted to jump out to “startle” his pal Andrew Williams as he passed.
But he was struck by a train before he could leap out from his hiding place.
The pair were near the end of their trek and were set to get the bus back to their homes in Pontypool, near Newport, when Mr Townsend sneaked off.
The inquest heard how Mr Townsend climbed a steep embankment at Little Mill, Monmouthshire, but slipped onto the track as the train went by.
He died from multiple injuries.
