Bird-strangling tramp is caged

Midweek Sport - - FRONT PAGE -

A CALIFORNIA tramp has been convicted of strangling a brown PELICAN to death near the Malibu Pier.

Police say Sergio Alvarez, 30, said he found the bird dead when he was quizzed about it.

Later, the bearded hobo admitted he killed the pelican because he was hungry and hadn’t been able to catch any fish.

A witness told the sheriff’s deputy that he spotted a man choking a pelican.

And other stunned beachgoers say Alvarez had his hands around the bird’s throat and that it was flapping its wings in distress before going completely limp.

Alvarez pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and was sentenced to 60 days in jail and a year’s probation.
