POP legend Gerry Marsden launched a five-minute ‘rant’ about the Hillsborough disaster during a gig.

The Liverpudlian lead singer of Gerry and the Pacemakers referred to the police as ‘pigs’ and ‘f***ing liars’ in his outburst in protest at the cover-up.

The singer’s Liverpool FC anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone has re-entered the top 40 after the publication of a damning report into the 1989 tragedy last week.

The majority of Marsden’s audience appeared bemused by his words and a stunned silence spread over the auditorium last Saturday night.

However, some walked out after being offended by the speech.

One member of the audience at Darlington Civic Centre in County Durham, a former cop who has asked not to be named, said: “This was a foul-mouthed tirade. It spoilt our night. Gerry said it in a way that suggested he was talking about all police.”

Gerry ( above) was unavailable to comment.
