Sick funeral tribute to suspect in cop killings
VANDALS staged a sick tribute to the man accused of murdering two policewomen – daubing offensive graffiti at the funeral of another of his alleged victims.
The yobs painted: “Dale Cregan is a God’’ on the walls of the church as mourners were due to arrive for the burial service of Dave Short, 46, who was shot dead outside his home in August.
Police managed to cover up the graffiti with a sheet and the paint was removed by council workmen before the service took place at St Willibrords Church in Clayton, Manchester, yesterday.
Cregan, 29, is awaiting trial accused of the murders of Short, his son Mark, 23 and WPCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes – the two policewomen killed in a gun and grenade attack last month in Hattersley.
Police initially stood guard at the door of the church and warned onlookers it was a “private family affair.’’
Earlier they also won permission from local magistrates to shut all 27 local pubs for the day amid fears of further violence from feuding gangs.
The funerals of the two policewomen take place at Manchester Cathedral today and Thursday.
