DAVE’LL FIX IT!
Cameron says he will strip Jimmy Savile of knighthood
PRIME Minister David Cameron has vowed to do all he can to ‘fix it’ for shamed Jimmy Savile to be stripped of his knighthood.
Yesterday police revealed they have 120 leads from victims and witnesses to his sex abuse and former fans have called for his title to be removed.
When asked if Savile should lose his knighthood on ITV’s Daybreak, Cameron, 46, said: “We have something called a Forfeiture Committee.
“It is not chaired or sat on by me but it is responsible for looking at honours and the removal of honours and obviously they have to do their job too.”
He added: “These stories are deeply, deeply troubling and I hope every organisation that has responsibilities will have a proper investigation into what happened, and if these things did happen, and how they were allowed to happen. And then of course, everyone has to take their responsibilities.”
A Tory insider added: “Have no doubt this is going to happen – but Mr Cameron cannot just demand things.
“They have to go through due process. But it will happen – no-one’s going to argue against it are they?”
At present, a knighthood only applies when the person is alive and, as Savile died aged 84 last year, in theory it doesn’t exist.
A spokesman for the Cabinet Office said: “It’s a living order and you cease to be a member when you die. There isn’t an honour to revoke.”
The source added: Cameron knows he must do something to show the government recognises the magnitude of the claims being made against Savile.
“He can’t just go out there and say he will strip him of his knighthood as there needs to be a change in the law, but he plans to do something pretty drastic.”
A number of women have come forward to say they were abused by Savile following last week’s ITV1 Exposure documentary. FREDDIE Starr, 69, has suffered heart palpitations after being accused of groping a girl at a Jimmy Savile sex party, according to his fiancé Sophie Lea, 34.
He has vigorously denied the allegations.
