Cyclist crash cop spared jail term
A COP who mowed down a talented musician while driving at more than twice the speed limit to an emergency call has walked free from court.
PC David Lynch, 31, received an eight-month suspended sentence after hitting cyclist Joseph Belmonte from behind, throwing him across his bonnet and into a tree.
Dad-of-two Lynch was driving at up to 68mph in a 30mph zone in Hackney, east London, when his Mercedes Vito van “took off” going over a bridge and gouged holes in the road as it landed.
He lost control and hit Belmonte, 31, at 45mph. He was left with brain and spinal injuries and a broken arm and finger.
Lynch, who has since quit the force, pleaded guilty to careless driving and was also convicted of dangerous driving at Southwark Crown Court.
