TV cop Lewis is hanging up the handcuffs
TELLY bosses are axing detective drama Lewis from ITV because the two main stars don’t want to carry on.
The series – a spinoff from ITV1 hit Inspector Morse – will end after the next run of episodes.
Main characters Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox want to pursue other projects after six years on the show and telly chiefs admit that is likely to mean the end of the cop drama.
A production insider said: “Kevin and Laurence don’t have an appetite to do any more. It has run its course.”
Producers have confessed that they hope to bring it back after the actors have had a break.
Earlier this year Colin Dexter, the creator of Morse, said: “I don’t think Lewis can go on much longer.”
In the meantime, they are planning a series of Endeavour –a prequel to Morse set in the Sixties.
A one-off pilot show at the beginning of the year pulled in eight million viewers.
