Brook­ing said: “We have to pro­duce good young Eng­land play­ers. We must make them bet­ter in those early years.

“There are three key age groups: 5-11, 12-16 and 17-21.

“We have to fo­cus on those first two age groups and pro­duce qual­ity play­ers who are good enough to break into a Premier League first-team at 18 or 19.

“The key to the long term at the elite level is to make sure the grass­roots level comes up. Then they’ll be able to deal with the game we see from Barcelona and Spain.

“We’ve got to get our boys play­ing the same game.
