Fireman Dan goes ape and nabs ‘gorilla’
HERO firefighter Dan Winters chased and caught an armed raider disguised in a Gorilla outfit while he was on patrol in his fire engine.
Dan, 30, jumped out of the tender at traffic lights and ran after yob Kris Whittaker after spotting him flee a post office brandishing an imitation shotgun.
After a 500-yard pursuit Dan ( above) and a passing van driver grabbed Whittaker outside a primary school, wrestled him to the ground, ripped off his monkey mask and held onto him until police arrived.
The weapon turned out to be painted black pipes taped together.
Dan, who boxes for Greater Manchester Fire Service, is now in line for a bravery award after Whittaker, 31, was jailed for five years at Bolton Crown Court after admitting attempted robbery and possession of a firearm.
The father-of-five said: “I just thought, ‘I’m going to have to do something’.
“I got a good telling off from the missus when I got home. But I would do it again.”
