Fire­man Dan goes ape and nabs ‘gorilla’

HERO fire­fighter Dan Win­ters chased and caught an armed raider dis­guised in a Gorilla out­fit while he was on pa­trol in his fire engine.

Dan, 30, jumped out of the ten­der at traf­fic lights and ran af­ter yob Kris Whit­taker af­ter spot­ting him flee a post of­fice bran­dish­ing an im­i­ta­tion shot­gun.

Af­ter a 500-yard pur­suit Dan ( above) and a pass­ing van driver grabbed Whit­taker out­side a pri­mary school, wres­tled him to the ground, ripped off his mon­key mask and held onto him un­til po­lice ar­rived.

The weapon turned out to be painted black pipes taped to­gether.

Dan, who boxes for Greater Manch­ester Fire Ser­vice, is now in line for a brav­ery award af­ter Whit­taker, 31, was jailed for five years at Bolton Crown Court af­ter ad­mit­ting at­tempted rob­bery and pos­ses­sion of a firearm.

The fa­ther-of-five said: “I just thought, ‘I’m go­ing to have to do some­thing’.

“I got a good telling off from the mis­sus when I got home. But I would do it again.”
