Conwoman’s heart op lie to dodge jail
A CONWOMAN who stole £158,000 from her employers lied about having heart surgery to avoid being jailed.
Joanne Brooks, 42, was arrested after twice failing to show up at Portsmouth Crown Court.
On the first occasion in September, the fraudster claimed she had suffered a heart attack and last week the court was told she was under the knife.
The court demanded medical evidence and she was forced to admit she had made it all up.
Christopher Wing, defending, described Brook’s behaviour as ‘extraordinary’ and said: “There will be no medical evidence. That was not true.”
Wing faces up to 10 years in jail after taking cash from Laura and Roy Carvalho who ran a BMW modification business in Gosport, Hants.
Brooks has admitted two counts of fraud stretching from October 2009 to July 2011 and failing to attend court.
She started work in an administrative role and became involved with the firm’s accounts.
