NEARLY a million tourists travelled to Britain to watch the Premier League last year – spending £706million in the process, figures show.
VisitBritain says that 900,000 ‘football tourists’ took in a game while visiting and spent the equivalent of £785 per fan.
The research found that 40 per cent of foreign fans going to a football match said that watching sport was the main reason for visiting the UK.
The Premier League is recognised as the world’s most exciting competition, especially after last season’s finale.
Then Sergio Aguero (above) grabbed the title for Manchester City with virtually the last kick of the season.
Most football related visits were made by guests from Ireland (174,000), followed by Norway (80,000), USA (61,000), Spain (54,000) and Germany (48,000).
Nearly 20 per cent of visiting fans went to Old Trafford, closely followed by Anfield.
