Mum ‘hit by truck as its driver ate’
A LANDSCAPE gardener who crushed a mother to death with his tipper truck was distracted because he was eating a McDonald’s, a court heard.
Aaron Dainty, 24, was having breakfast when he reversed and hit Phillipa Watson, 51, it was said.
Mrs Watson was herself walking to the fast food chain when she was struck
Dainty was with four other colleagues who had just finished a night shift and was parking the truck in the road alongside the diner in Greenhithe at 7.15am on August 24.
Maidstone Crown Court heard that as the woman was struck as she walked past. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A McDonald’s staff member told the court he heard a scream and looked up to see the truck reversing over the mother-of-two.
Just seconds earlier he had wished Mrs Watson, a cleaner from Dartford, a good day.
The prosecutor told the court: “The Crown accept it was an accident, but one that could have been easily avoided if he had been driving with care.”
The McDonalds staff member claimed: “The only thing I could see was that he (Dainty) had food in his hand.”
Dainty, of Canvey Island, Essex, denies causing death by careless driving and the trial continues.
