Phoenix: Oscars are ‘bullsh*t’

Midweek Sport - - THURSDAY NOVEMBER 1 -

HOLLYWOOD star Joaquin Phoenix has stunned fans by calling the Oscars ‘bullsh*t’.

The 37-year-old was nominated for Best Actor at the 2005 Academy Awards for his role as Johnny Cash in Walk The Line, and is expected to get another for his latest film The Master.

But Phoenix, 37, says he hates the idea of pitching actors against each other.

He said: “I’m just saying that I think it’s bullsh*t. I think it’s total, utter bullsh*t, and I don’t want to be a part of it.

“I don’t believe in it. It’s a carrot, but it’s the worst-tasting carrot I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don’t want this carrot.

“Pitting people against each other...it’s the stupidest thing in the whole world.

“It was one of the most uncomfortable periods of my life when Walk the Line was going through all the awards stuff.

“I never want to have that experience again.”
