BIG APPLE GRAPPLES WITH KILLER STORM
U.S. President Barack Obama yesterday declared a “major disaster” in New York state after superstorm Sandy smashed into the country’s East Coast, causing flooding and cutting power to millions.
A record 13ft tidal surge sent seawater cascading into large parts of the Big Apple’s subway system.
Across the city, a power sub-station exploded, a hospital was evacuated, fire destroyed 50 homes and a SHIP was washed up a street on Staten Island.
At least 20 people were reported dead across several states and at least eight million homes and businesses were left without power. In all, about 50 million people have been affected by the storm, with up to a million ordered to evacuate.
