Banker’s ‘£750K theft from ATMS’

A FORMER Hal­i­fax worker ap­peared in court ac­cused of steal­ing over £750,000 from the high street bank’s cash machines.

Ben­jamin Sookia, 26, who worked as counter staff is ac­cused of net­ting the sum over seven months.

A court heard that Sookia, who had held the ju­nior po­si­tion for six years, was in­ves­ti­gated in af­ter al­leged ir­reg­u­lar­i­ties were no­ticed in his per­sonal ac­counts.

It is al­leged he took cash from ATMs be­fore switch­ing to mov­ing money into his own ac­count elec­tron­i­cally.

The Red­ditch, Worcs, branch worker faced three counts of fraud and three of theft at Red­ditch Mag­is­trates Court, to which Sookia did not in­di­cate a plea.

The case was com­mit­ted to crown court and Sookia was granted bail to reap­pear on Fe­bru­ary 25.
