SIGN up to a po­lit­i­cal or­gan­i­sa­tion and you might re­ceive a com­pli­men­tary pen, if you’re lucky.

Join the Cam­bo­dian Free­dom Fight­ers (CFF) and you’re just as likely to end up with a B-40 rocket or AK-47 as­sault ri­fle in your hands as you are a nice new shiny ball­point.

But then, CFF is NOT your av­er­age po­lit­i­cal or­gan­i­sa­tion.

Es­tab­lished in 1989 by Ch­hun Ya­sith in Poipet, near the Cam­bo­dian-Thai bor­der, CFF has its HQ in Cal­i­for­nia and de­scribes it­self as an anti-com­mu­nist or­gan­i­sa­tion.

In 1999, it was reg­is­tered at the Cal­i­for­nian Sec­re­tary Of State’s of­fice as a po­lit­i­cal group which aims “to fight against com­mu­nists to pro­tect the in­ter­ests of Cam­bo­dian peo­ple”.

And that fight has in­volved brute force, ter­ri­ble vi­o­lence
