Rope dope bridge dare led to 5k bill

A BOOZY prankster left dan­gling from a foot­bridge above a main road as part of a daft bet cost tax­pay­ers nearly £5,000.

Lee Bas­sett ap­peared be­fore mag­is­trates in Ply­mouth, Devon, where he ad­mit­ted caus­ing dan­ger to road users.

Bas­sett, 29, from Ply­mouth, was ar­rested on Jan­uary 24 af­ter cops found him with a rope around his waist hang­ing barely eight feet over three lanes of traf­fic.

Pros­e­cu­tor Will Rose said: “Po­lice were there for at least 90 min­utes. Spi­der­man, Mr Bas­sett is not.”

Mr Rose said when he spoke to po­lice Bas­sett said it was ‘a bet that went wrong’ and ad­mit­ted hav­ing ‘had a few jars’.

Mr Rose added: “As a re­sult of this bizarre prank it cost the pub­lic purse £4,875.” Bas­sett will be sen­tenced next month.
